Sending a Student to College This Fall? An Insurance Checklist for Warren County Families
Move-in week at Miami University, the University of Cincinnati and Wright State lands in the second half of August, and it quietly changes three policies most Warren County families already own: auto, homeowners and health. None of them update themselves. Here is what to confirm before the car is packed.
What insurance changes when your child leaves for college?
Three policies are affected: your auto policy, your homeowners policy and your health plan. Your auto rating changes based on whether the student takes a car to school and how far away that school is. Your homeowners policy extends limited personal property coverage to a dorm but usually not to an off-campus apartment. Your health plan can keep the student as a dependent, but the provider network may not reach the campus town.
Each change has a deadline attached to the school calendar, not your renewal date. Waiting until the policy renews in January means carrying the wrong coverage for a full semester.
Does your child stay on your car insurance at college?
Yes, in almost every case a student who still lists your address as their permanent residence stays on your policy. Removing them is what creates a claim problem, because a driver who lives at home over breaks and drives your vehicles needs to be listed on the policy that covers those vehicles.
What can change is the rate. Most carriers offer a student-away-at-school discount when the student attends a school beyond a set distance, commonly 100 miles, and leaves the car at home. From Lebanon, that distance rule matters:
- Miami University in Oxford is roughly 35 miles away, so it typically falls inside the threshold and does not qualify.
- University of Cincinnati is roughly 30 miles away and also falls inside it.
- Ohio State, Ohio University and Bowling Green are all past 100 miles, so a student who leaves the car in Lebanon usually qualifies.
If the student does take a car to campus, tell your agent the garaging address. Rates are set by ZIP code, and a vehicle parked in Athens or Columbus for nine months is rated differently than one parked in Warren County. Reporting it wrong is a coverage problem later, not a savings strategy.
Is a dorm room covered by your homeowners policy?
Usually yes, but at a fraction of your normal limit. A standard homeowners policy extends off-premises personal property coverage to a full-time student living in a dorm, and that extension is commonly capped at 10 percent of your personal property limit. On a policy with a $100,000 contents limit, that is $10,000 for everything in the dorm room.
Two things trip families up. First, your homeowners deductible still applies, so a stolen $1,200 laptop against a $1,000 deductible pays $200. Second, the extension applies to the student living in campus housing. Move the student into an off-campus apartment and most policies stop extending it.
When does a college student need renters insurance?
A student needs their own renters policy the moment they sign a lease for off-campus housing. That is the point where the parents' homeowners extension typically ends and the student becomes a tenant with their own liability exposure, including damage to the landlord's unit.
Renters insurance is one of the least expensive policies we place, and it covers three things a dorm extension does not handle well: full contents limits chosen by the student, personal liability if a guest is injured or a kitchen fire spreads, and loss of use if the unit becomes unlivable. Many Oxford and Clifton landlords now require proof of a renters policy before handing over keys, so it often becomes a lease condition rather than a choice.
Can your student stay on your health insurance?
Yes. Federal law lets an adult child remain on a parent's health plan until age 26, regardless of whether they are enrolled in school, married or living at home. Nothing about turning 18 or starting college removes them.
The question to ask is not eligibility but network. If your plan is an HMO or a narrow network built around Cincinnati and Dayton hospitals, care in a distant campus town may be out of network except for emergencies. Before move-in, check whether the campus health center and the nearest hospital are in network, and confirm how the plan handles prescriptions filled outside the service area. If the student is heading to school out of state, that is worth a conversation before the fall term starts rather than after the first urgent care visit.
What should Warren County families do before move-in week?
Run this list with your agent in one phone call:
- Confirm the student stays listed on the auto policy and ask whether the school qualifies for a student-away-at-school discount.
- If a car goes to campus, report the garaging ZIP code.
- Check your personal property limit and calculate the 10 percent dorm extension against what the student is actually taking.
- Add a renters policy if the housing is an off-campus apartment or house.
- Verify the campus-area providers are in your health plan's network.
- Photograph and list high-value items, especially laptops, tablets and instruments, and keep receipts.
