Navigating Medicare in Lebanon, Ohio

Turning 65 or qualifying for Medicare can feel overwhelming. With so many plans, enrollment periods, and coverage options, it's easy to get confused. As an independent insurance agency serving Lebanon since 1975, we've helped thousands of Warren County residents understand their Medicare options and find the right coverage.

What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, as well as some younger people with disabilities. It's divided into several parts, each covering different aspects of your healthcare.

Understanding the Parts of Medicare

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care. Most people don't pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. Unlike Part A, Part B requires a monthly premium. In 2026, the standard premium is $185 per month for most beneficiaries.

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)

Also called Medicare Advantage, these are bundled plans offered by private insurance companies that combine Part A, Part B, and usually Part D (prescription drug coverage). Many plans also include extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

Part D helps cover the cost of prescription medications. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Each plan has its own formulary (list of covered drugs).

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn't cover all healthcare costs. Medigap policies help fill the gaps by covering copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These policies are sold by private insurance companies and can provide peace of mind for predictable healthcare costs.

When to Enroll in Medicare

Initial Enrollment Period

Your Initial Enrollment Period begins 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after. Enrolling during this window helps you avoid late enrollment penalties.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

From October 15 to December 7 each year, you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage and Part D coverage. Changes take effect January 1.

Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment

The best time to buy a Medigap policy is during your 6-month open enrollment period, which starts the month you're 65 and enrolled in Part B. During this time, you can buy any Medigap policy without medical underwriting.

Choosing the Right Medicare Plan in Warren County

There's no one-size-fits-all Medicare solution. The right plan depends on:

  • Your current health and prescription needs
  • Your preferred doctors and hospitals
  • Your budget for premiums and out-of-pocket costs
  • Whether you travel frequently or spend winters elsewhere

Why Work with a Local Medicare Agent?

Navigating Medicare alone can be confusing. As independent agents in Lebanon, we:

  • Compare plans from multiple insurance carriers
  • Explain your options in plain language
  • Help you understand costs, coverage, and network restrictions
  • Assist with enrollment paperwork
  • Provide ongoing support throughout the year
  • Review your coverage annually during AEP

Common Medicare Questions from Lebanon Residents

Can I keep my doctor?

It depends on the plan you choose. Original Medicare allows you to see any doctor who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans typically have networks, so it's important to check if your doctors are in-network.

Do I need Part D if I don't take medications?

Even if you don't currently take prescriptions, enrolling in Part D when first eligible protects you from late enrollment penalties if you need coverage later.

What's the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medigap?

Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a private plan that often includes extra benefits. Medigap supplements Original Medicare by covering out-of-pocket costs. You can't have both.
