Business Insurance in Lebanon, Ohio: What Small Businesses Often Miss

Lebanon, Ohio has a thriving small business community — from contractors and retail shops along Broadway to service providers across Warren County. Most of those business owners carry some form of insurance. The problem is that “some” coverage and enough coverage are rarely the same thing.

At Michael Insurance Planning, we work with small business owners every day, and we see the same gaps come up repeatedly. Here are the most common — and most costly — things Lebanon area businesses overlook.

1. Assuming General Liability Covers Everything

General liability is a solid foundation, but it only covers third-party bodily injury and property damage. It does not cover your own equipment, your employees, lost income when you can’t operate, or professional errors. Many business owners sign up for GL and assume they’re fully protected — they’re not.

Depending on what you do, you may also need:

  • Professional Liability (E&O) — for consultants, accountants, contractors, and anyone who gives advice or delivers a service
  • Product Liability — if you manufacture, distribute, or sell physical goods
  • Commercial Property Insurance — to cover your building, inventory, and equipment if they’re damaged or stolen

2. Skipping Workers’ Compensation

Ohio law requires workers’ compensation for most businesses with even one employee. Yet we regularly meet business owners who have grown from sole proprietor to employer without updating their coverage.

Going without workers’ comp isn’t just a legal risk — if an employee is injured on the job, you could be personally liable for medical costs and lost wages. In Ohio, the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) handles most policies, but an independent agent can help you navigate your obligations and find any available discounts.

3. No Business Interruption Coverage

What happens to your business if a fire forces you to close for two months? Or a severe storm damages your Lebanon storefront during peak season?

Business interruption insurance replaces lost income and covers ongoing expenses — rent, payroll, utilities — while you get back on your feet. Without it, a single covered property loss can turn into a business-ending event even after the physical damage is repaired.

4. Using a Personal Vehicle for Business Without Commercial Auto Coverage

If you or your employees drive personal vehicles to job sites, make deliveries, or visit clients, your personal auto policy likely does not cover accidents that happen during those trips. Most personal auto policies exclude “business use.”

A commercial auto policy — or a business-use endorsement — closes that gap. This is especially important for contractors, landscapers, real estate agents, and anyone regularly driving for work in the Lebanon and Warren County area.

5. Ignoring Cyber Liability

Cyber liability isn’t just for tech companies. Any business that stores customer data, processes payments, or uses email is a potential target. A single breach can mean notification costs, regulatory fines, credit monitoring for customers, and lost business — expenses that can reach tens of thousands of dollars for a small business.

Cyber liability insurance is now affordable for small businesses and covers data breach response, legal costs, and business interruption from a cyber event. If you take credit cards or store any customer information, this coverage is worth a conversation.

6. Not Reviewing Coverage as the Business Grows

The policy that was right when you launched with two employees and a single location may be dangerously inadequate once you’ve hired a team, added a vehicle, or expanded your services. Business insurance should be reviewed at least once a year — and immediately after any significant change to your operations.

Why an Independent Agent Makes a Difference

When you work with a captive agent — one who only sells for a single carrier — your options are limited to what that one company offers. At Michael Insurance Planning, we’re an independent agency with access to more than 25 carriers. That means we shop your coverage across the market to find the right combination of protection and price, not just whatever fits one company’s product lineup.

We’ve been serving Lebanon and Warren County businesses since 1975. We know the local market, the local risks, and the local businesses — and we’re here when you have a claim, not just when you’re buying a policy.
